Frederick Carlton (Carl) Lewis (Birmingham (Alabama), July 1, 1961) is a former American track and field athlete who won ten Olympic medals, including nine gold medals, and ten medals at the World Championships in Athletics, including eight gold medals, during his career. Lewis' eventful career lasted from 1979 to 1996, when he won his ninth Olympic title. Lewis was a sprinter and long jumper who was regularly ranked number one in the world in the 100m and 200m sprints and long jump from 1980 to the early 1990s. He improved the world records in the 100 m, 4 x 100 m relay and 4 x 200 m relay. In 1982, 1983 and 1984 he was voted Athlete of the Year by Track & Field News, an American athletics magazine. His ten-year streak of 65 consecutive victories in the long jump is one of the most remarkable performances ever achieved in athletics. For his achievements, he was named Athlete of the Century by the IOC and Olympic Athlete of the Century by the American sports magazine Sports Illustrated.
