WOMEN IN THE ARTS Abrams hardcover Engelstalig 255 blz.
The National Museum of Women in the Arts is the first – and only – museum in the world devoted exclusively to art produced by women. The Museum’s holdings cover four centuries and represent the creative endeavors of women all over the world and in all mediums. This beautifully illustrated volume celebrates the opening of the Museum’s permanent quarters in Washington, D.C.
Today the Museum’s collection includes works by such familiar artists as Mary Cassatt, Berthe Morisot, Angelica Kauffman, Georgia O’Keeffe, Sonia Delaunay, Camille Claudel, Frida Kahlo, Suzanne Valadon, Marie Laurencin, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Käthe Kollwitz, Gabriele Münter, Dorothea Tanning, Nathalia Goncharova, Lee Krasner, Alice Neel, Gwen John, Helen Frankenthaler, photographer Berenice Abbott, and sculptors Rosa Bonheur and Barbara Hepworth, among others. It is immediately apparent that the paintings, sculptures, photographs and graphics are all works of high quality, creating a collection outstanding in its variety.
More than 230 works from the Museum – including 69 plates reproduced in full color – are illustrated in this volume. Each full-page colorplate is discussed in a detailed essay that provides information about the artist and the time in which she lived. A contemporary image of the artist – self-portrait, portrait, or photograph – accompanies many of the colorplates and contributes an interesting facet to the biographical discussion. …”
