BIOGRAPHY:
Panamarenko was one of the most iconic Belgian artists of the 20th century, known for his innovative and visionary works that blended art, technology, and science. His pseudonym, "Panamarenko," is a combination of "Pan American Airlines" and "Company," reflecting his fascination with aviation and travel.

Education and Early Career
Panamarenko studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. In the 1960s, he became involved in the avant-garde art scene, influenced by movements such as Fluxus and Pop Art. His early works consisted of happenings and performances, often humorous and provocative in nature.

Art and Inspiration
Panamarenko’s work is characterized by his obsession with movement, flight, and technology. He designed and built futuristic machines that resembled flying machines, submarines, and vehicles. While technically complex, his works were never meant to be functional. Instead, they were poetic expressions of dreams and ideas about human ambition and technology.

Key themes in his work include:

Aviation: His flying machines, such as the Aeromodeller and Umbilly Icarus, were inspired by nature and engineering.
Science: He incorporated elements of physics and aerodynamics into his designs.
Utopian Dreams: His works reflect a quest for freedom and the impossible.

Notable Works
Prova Car (1966): A futuristic vehicle that hinted at his later work.
The Aeromodeller (1969): A massive balloon combined with a zeppelin, one of his most iconic pieces.
Batopillo (1996): A flying machine inspired by bats.
Backpack Wings (1975): A portable flying device.

Recognition and Legacy
Panamarenko gained international recognition and participated in prestigious exhibitions, including Documenta in Kassel and the Venice Biennale. His work was celebrated for its unique blend of art, technology, and poetry.

In 2005, he retired from the art world with a major exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp (M HKA). He then settled in the countryside of Balen, Belgium, where he continued working on ideas and designs.

Death
Panamarenko passed away on December 14, 2019, at the age of 79. His work remains an inspiration for artists and thinkers who seek to push the boundaries between disciplines.

His studio in Antwerp has been transformed into a museum and archive to preserve his vision and creations.
