A small bonsh adorned with kanji characters and a dragon sculpture around 150-200 years ago. The item exuding an ethereal air with the delicately carved Kanji (), creating a mysterious allure. Its noticeable wear suggests that it was likely utilized not as a mere bell but as a Buddhist temple bell, used to announce the passage of time. Bonsh (, Buddhist bells), also known as tsurigane (, hanging bells) or gane (, great bells) are large bells found in Buddhist temples throughout Japan, used to summon the monks to prayer and to demarcate periods of time. (From Wikipedia) Bonsh is also referred to as the "gathering bell (, sheish)," and it is struck 30 minutes or 1 hour before the start of ceremonies or rituals as a signal for the congregation to assemble. Additionally, to welcome the new year with a fresh mindset by dispelling worldly desires, it is struck 108 times, representing the same number as the worldly desires. Due to its loud sound, Bonsh is also called "geish" or "hsh" in some cases.
