In many ancient cultures, the number 3 had a special significance. It was often considered as the perfect number, the number of harmony, wisdom and understanding; or as the number of time: past, present and future, or birth, life, death; beginning, middle and end.

The Capitoline Triad (Jupiter, Juno and Minerva) were central to the Roman religion, and the Archaic Triad (Jupiter, Mars and Quirinus) were associated with the early Roman state.

In Roman mythology, the Three Fates (Parcae: Nona, Decima and Morta) controlled the human destiny. In Roman religious rituals, the Three Graces (Gratiae or the Charities) were invoked for blessings related to joy, fertility, and goodwill.

The Roman military often organised itself in threes; like the three lines in battle formation: hastati, principes and triarii. The third line soldiers (triarii) were the oldest, most experienced and best soldiers in the Legion. They were a reserve line that was put into combat at critical moments when the other two lines were stopped.

The Latin phrase 'omne trium perfectum' (everything in threes is perfect) reflects the Roman belief in the completeness and significance of the number 3.
