About this book:
The Album Amicorum of Jacob Heyblocq is the title of a book that comes with the facsimile of the actual Album Amicorum of Jacobus Heyblocq (1623-1690). Jacob Heyblocq was a poet and rector of the Latin school in Amsterdam. He was married to Maria de Lange. Heyblocq became head of the Latin school, but his management skills fell short and he was dismissed in 1685. His wife Maria had died by then and he was then married to his second wife, Debora Schoonhoven.

This introduction serves to the book that has survived from him, his Album Amicorum. What exactly is that? It is Latin for “book of friends,” and it is an album in which the owner collected personal contributions from others. These were inserted into the book at the owner's request and could include dedications, wishes, drawings, quotations or even cut-out artwork. Those who contributed could be fellow students, teachers, friends, colleagues or famous people.

Jacob Heyblocq's Album Amicorum is not the only surviving album of its kind, nor is it the oldest. A quick scan reveals that 26 albums are known from the sixteenth century and 7 albums from the seventeenth century including Heyblocq's. Heyblocq's album is unique in its kind and there is really only one that comes close, that of the Amsterdam lawyer and poet Johan Blasius (1639-1672).
